Ladies and gentleman, the inevitable has happened — Tyra Banks has lost her freaking mind.

No, I’m not talking about the horrendous crimped hairstyle she recently wore to celebrate Vogue Italia’s first all-black model issue.

I’m not even referencing the recent reports that she kept an audience for her talk show waiting for two hours while she gabbed with stagehands around the snack table backstage.

I’m talking about Isis, Banks’ newest headline-snagging protégé.

Fourteen contestants are taking part in Cycle 11 of “America’s Next Top Model,” but only one of those 14 has the distinction of being born a man.

The 22-year-old aspiring model and Maryland native told Us Weekly that she is a woman who was born a male.

Now, I understand everyone is different — and transgendered persons have just as much right to be America’s next top model as anyone else.

But I personally find it a little hard to believe that Isis is more qualified to strut her stuff down the runway than the thousands of actual women she beat out for the part — including a bevy of Baton Rouge beauties when auditions were held in our fair city.

Which leads me to my next question — Is Isis pre-op or post-op?

She is tall, thin and leggy with boyish good looks that could lead to either conclusion.

Perhaps this is the final push in the campaign started by Twiggy in the 1960s and revived by Kate Moss in the 1990s of having runway models with the figures of 13-year-old boys.

Instead of having high-strung cocaine addicts who puke after meals as role models, young girls can idolize the bodies of modern- day eunuchs.

Perhaps Isis’ inherent testosterone will make her less of a cat-fighting attention whore than the other divas in training.

If Banks, the CW and co. want something to talk about, why not just allow men to participate in the show? Then Isis could stand and deliver without the surgery.

Do men want to be snipped at by noted fashion photographer Nigel Barker and runway diva extraordinaire Miss J. Alexander so badly that they’ll go to excruciating lengths to reach their goal? Are they aching for face time with Paulina Porizkova so hard that they’re willing to castrate themselves?

I wonder how Isis’ past will influence her performance on the show.

The ANTM judges have always expressed their love of androgyny in contestants like Cycle 5’s Kim. But what about Kim’s fellow castmate Coryn, who was frequently chastised for being too masculine?

I wonder if such comments directed at Isis would be considered offensive.

If this was a true attempt to be open-minded and progressive, I would applaud the ANTM team. But I call a spade a spade, and shameless plays for ratings make me reach for my Daily Reveille-issued shovel.

Plus-sized models are old news. We’ve seen scores of confrontational contestants. We’ve had race issues out the wazoo. There was even a lesbian hook up in Cycle 5. Now we’ve reached the final frontier of edgy reality TV.

Can a woman — born a man, but now a woman — make it as a top model?

This must herald the final chapter of “America’s Next Top Model.” How do they top this? Lizard people?

ANTM has a rich and diverse history of capitalizing on the differences of one girl each season.

Cycle 3 winner Eva was short – for a model.

Cycle 5 contestant Kim was a lesbian and Cycle 10 winner Whitney was plus sized.

They even had Heather — a contestant with Asperger’s Syndrome — on Cycle 9.

Banks recaps the chosen sob story at the front of every episode in an effort to strengthen the contestant’s emotional chokehold on the audience.

And honestly, if Isis is cool with being exploited who am I to contradict her? I’m sure this is the big throbbing break she’s been waiting for all her young life.

Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation president Neil Giuliano told Us Weekly this is “an unprecedented opportunity for a community that is underrepresented on television.”

I have to respectfully disagree with Mr. Giuliano.

Is he completely disregarding the character of Mrs. Garrison on South Park?

Besides, no one encompasses the phrase “hot tranny mess” better than Tyra Banks — and I see her on TV every day.

Leave it to the far left to again not accept another's views, but get mad when their views are challenged.... Ms. Scott has the right to voice her opinion...plain and simple! Perez Hilton can call any female a prostitute or draw phalic symbols on them and he is applauded by the glbt community, but calling a transgender woman a tranny is offensive!? Asking if they are post or pre op (2 very different medical and legal things) is offensive? Ms. Scott is showing that ANTM is using transgender men as a ploy to get you to watch their show. You should be frowning on ANTM for using you as a marketing tool to "shock" america into watching . ANTM is basically using the Transgender community as their "sideshow freak." (which i do not agree with, nor am i trying to call transexuals freaks i am simply stating my opinion on what i feel antm's advertisers are doing) Give Ms Scott a break! At least she is speaking her mind and not using you to sell covergirl! And come on Perez calls Tyra a hot tranny mess all the time!

As a transsexual woman I found the article to be insensitive and bigoted. Is it just wishful thinking to hope that a journalist would do some homework on a subject before making herself look prejudiced? Oh she seems to be well versed on ANTM history, but couldn't avoid spewing the same old myths and bigoted opinions that we are forced to deal with on a daily basis. We are not eunuchs, our hormone levels are that of women our age...... I could go on, but why bother? If Scott couldn't be bothered to do some research before writing her piece then she is probably not going to read any of this either.

I found Caitlyn Scott's opinion column "America's Next Top Model presents hot tranny mess," insensitive and ironically placed across an article covering the university's GBLSU (Gay, Bisexual, Lesbian, Supporters United) organization now known as Spectrum. Scott's discussion of reality series contestant Isis (the show's first transgendered guest) shamelessly offends GLBT readers.

Scott could have made a potentially stronger argument if she kept her focus on the exploitation of reality stars by shows like America's Next Top Model. Instead, she jokes about young girls idolizing the "bodies of modern-day eunuchs" or castrated men. Scott also suggests that Isis was "willing to castrate" herself in order to achieve "face time" with the show's celebrity hosts. It is more likely Isis has endured an emotional/psychological hardship that began at birth, and at some point made a physical change to match her inner self, not to get on some television series. Isis's participation is not going to encourage "Lizard People" to audition and she will certainly not occupy the same position in our culture as Mrs. Garrison of South Park as Scott suggests.

In actuality, Isis will have the most profound impact on the lives of young people going through similar gender identity issues. Like Scott predicts, Tyra Banks and producers will not hesitate to play the affections of viewers each episode with the tale of Isis and her struggles. No surprise there. I can only hope it promotes some understanding. The outcome of such a contestant will assure one thing; next season ANTM will have to search outside the GLBT community for ratings, and that is probably a good sign.

On the one page, Louisiana State University promotes a strong community built by students and faculty want to see political action and positive change in the GLBT community. Turn the page and it is Scott's opinion column. But it is just that, one person's opinion.

If you knew Caitlyn you'd know she is the least biggoted person you could know. Who really cares what they do on America's Top Model. This was an opinion about a man becoming a woman and competing on a modeling show. The entire premise is exploitive and stupid and the show should get your rath, not Miss Scott. She basically brought it to our attention. ( I personally never watch the show or Tyra Banks show.) I am shocked at all the ugly comments directed at this columnist.

Wow, I thought that this article might actually be insightful and interesting, but boy was I wrong. This is one of the most hateful articles I have ever read, and I have sure read many. You just put yourself off as some bigoted idiot, and it not only invalidates your point but it makes you look even more stupid than you actually are.

Who cares what the persons past was, I'm sure the girl is quite lovely to have made it on, they wouldn't have bothered if she was ugly. The whole point of ANTM is drama, and to expect anything less is not only stupid, but naive. I think you need to grow up a bit Caitlyn before you think you can function as a journalist and adult, because this was just hateful and childish.

I noticed you tried to redeem yourself with the comment, "Now, I understand everyone is different — and transgendered persons have just as much right to be America’s next top model as anyone else." But then you completely lost is when you said, "But I personally find it a little hard to believe that Isis is more qualified to strut her stuff down the runway than the thousands of actual women she beat out for the part"

You say that someone can be what they want, and then insult them by saying that they arent a woman. She is just as much of a woman as any of the other models, no matter what she used to be. So please do the world a favor, get your bigoted and childish crud out of journalism and maybe go back to your parents where they might actually put up with your crud. This world has moved too far in its time to need self righteous and bigoted people such as your self. We have all moved past this, its time for you to as well.

I also found this piece very offensive. While the author claims to be progressive and open-minded, she denigrates the trans-community and mocks transwomen by referring to this contestant as a "eunuch," which suggests someone who is "genderless" and "freaky". This contestant is not genderless; she is a woman. And if she's "freaky", and Kim and Heather and all of the plus-sized contestants are freaky, how many of us aren't "freaky"?

Also, the suggestion that this young woman has transitioned from male to female in order to PARTICIPATE IN A REALITY TV SHOW is just offensive (sorry for yelling). I'm not transgendered, but I have friends who've gone through that process. They had to struggle with their families, with their friends, with the medical community, and sometimes with themselves. I really dislike reading something that makes light of that process.

I agree that ANTM often walks a shoestring-thin line between raising awareness about certain issues/celebrating human diversity and exploitation of the characteristics that make its contestants unique. However, an article could have been written that intelligently discussed that issue AND did not disparage a large community of people.

Yes, lzard people will be cool. I've been getting more and more frustrated and bored with ANTM, and barely watched it last season. . This is just a stupid play for ratings (so obvious I know) and it just seems so blah. There has got to be some better way to revive the franchise.

What I would like to know is how many of the BR 'beauties' are personal friends of Ms. Scott. Maybe this is Ms. Scott's misguided attempt at providing support. Looks like a simple case of sour grapes to me.
Why put my name?

I'm personally looking forward to the cycle when "lizard people" are allowed to compete in ANTM. Someone needs to tell that stupid whore, Tyra, that she's discriminating against all the amphibious people around the world...especially those who are a "hot tranny mess." Who the hell does she think she is anyways?!

I see the Reveille has hit a new disgusting low.

There's just no excuse for a piece like this. No excuse at all.
