ASPIRE creates undergraduate research opportunities - 12 p.m.

Undergraduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences are getting hands-on research experience through the Arts and Sciences Program in research.

ASPIRE, founded by former Dean Guillermo Ferreyra, targets undergraduates in the College of Arts and Sciences.

The program was created last year, when it underwent a pilot run with only three students, according to Janet McDonald, associate dean and head of ASPIRE.

“The idea is to get you as an undergraduate beyond the classroom experience,” McDonald said. “Going to class is great but one of the best ways to learn something is to learn by doing it.”

McDonald said the program proved successful and now the funding supports room for 20 students and their advisors. Currently, 18 students are enrolled in the program.
