Miles: Coaching evaluations to come after bowl game

12/12/08 12:16 PM

LSU coach Les Miles said Thursday he has no plans to make staffing changes before the Tigers face No. 14 Georgia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Bowl in Atlanta on New Year's Eve. "The time to evaluate the year is after we are done playing," he said after a press conference with bowl officials. Co-defensive coordinators Bradley Dale Peveto and Doug Mallory have been under heat after the Tigers ended the season with five losses and a struggling defense, which ranks No. 9 in total defense in the Southeastern Conference. Miles previously said some "adjustments" would be made before the bowl game, but his comments Thursday indicated his team will prepare with the current staff. "Our staff is doing everything they can to recruit a great class. They're on the road...

Rumor Mill Churning Away

12/2/08 1:59 AM

With the regular season over and people demanding changes on the LSU coaching staff, the rumor mill is already grinding away.

The sexy rumor is that former Tennessee defensive coordinator John Chavis will land at LSU after being dismissed with Phillip Fulmer.

Another has former Ole Miss head coach and current Saints defensive line coach Ed Orgeron coming on board as the LSU defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator.

But, the problem with that is, I didn't know those two jobs were open.

Until I hear that the LSU defensive coordinators have been dismissed, then everything is hearsay.

Don't believe everything you read on the Internet or see on TV.

If you did that, you'd still be waiting for Les Miles to go to Michigan.

Back from Arkansas

11/29/08 9:59 PM

by Amy Brittain First of all, I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends. I certainly have a lot to be thankful for this year. Since I had to work the game in Little Rock, my family decided to rent a cabin in Hot Springs for Thanksgiving. Upon first arrival at War Memorial Stadium, I was shocked at the small size of the facility. I've watched that game every year on TV but never had the impression that the stadium was indeed that small. It seats around 53,000, and I was surprised that there were a lot of empty seats. Granted, the weather was awful (cold and drizzly the whole time, with some moderate rain falling at halftime) Next I learned that Arkansas is one of the few SEC schools to serve its mascot at the media meal. We had pulled pork sandwiches...

The sky is falling?

11/25/08 10:32 PM

How fitting that on Monday and a little on Tuesday morning that it rained in the Baton Rouge area, because if you listen to talk radio or to fans on the street corner, you'd swear the sky is falling. With the loss, LSU is now unranked, out of contention for 2nd place in the SEC West and is in danger of going to the oh-so awesome Independence Bowl. But, seriously, what did you expect? The cycle can only last so long. You can not lose names like Laron Landry, JaMarcus Russell, Dwayne Bowe, Craig Davis, Jacob Hester, Matt Flynn, Craig Steltz, Chevis Jackson and Ali Highsmith over the course of two seasons and expect to remain at the top of the mountain in an ultra competitive SEC. The future of LSU football is still bright, however. Just look at the depth chart. On offense, LSU loses...

Magnolia Bowl up for grabs

11/20/08 1:17 AM

I will be the first person to say I think "trophy games" in college football are lame attempts to make a game with no flavor have some spark. But in LSU and Ole Miss's case, I think the Magnolia Bowl trophy is a nice touch to what has been a great series. LSU and Ole Miss is a true rivalry, because you really can throw out the records when the two teams meet. LSU has been dominant in the W/L column in the past several years, but even when the Tigers have had superior talent (in 2006 and 2007), the Rebels played up to make the game competitive until the last play. This season with the teams far more evenly matched, it should be a good one again, like in 2003 when LSU went to Ole Miss to steal the SEC Western Division championship from the Rebels, or heck, even the infamous...
