LSU wide receivers coach D.J. McCarthy has resigned from the LSU football staff, the Athletic Department announced on Wednesday.

McCarthy, who just finished his third season with the Tigers, will not coach in the Capital One Bowl on Jan. 1 when LSU faces Penn State.

"Today I tendered my resignation from LSU," McCarthy said in a news release. "I would like to thank Coach [Les] Miles for the opportunity to work with him, the players I coached, and to have been a part of the great history and tradition at LSU. LSU has the best fans and supporters in the world. We should all be proud of the accomplishments and achievements of the football program during my time here. My family and I would like to thank the Tiger Nation for three great years."

Athletic Director Joe Alleva confirmed in a Nov. 30 statement that LSU is currently investigating a possible violation involving the football team. McCarthy is involved in the alleged violation, according to a story by The Advocate on Nov. 30.

Herb Vincent, senior associate athletic director and associate vice chancellor for university relations, declined further comment on McCarthy's resignation or the ongoing investigation at this time.

McCarthy's resignation will take full effect on Feb. 28, 2010, according to an official resignation agreement with the University. The agreement says McCarthy is "immediately relieved of any and all responsibilities relating to coaching and interaction with student-athletes."

The document continues to say that McCarthy has already been relieved of any duties related to recruiting players to LSU, and that restriction will remain until Feb. 28.

The University will continue to pay McCarthy $16,667.67 a month until his resignation becomes official, according to the resignation agreement.

"My thanks to DJ for his service these past three seasons at LSU and for the contributions he made to our program," Miles said in the release. "I wish him the best in his future endeavors."

The agreement between McCarthy and the University includes a "voluntary declaration" clause, which states the resignation was completed "voluntarily and after mature deliberation, without any threat, duress, intimidation or unlawful means exercised towards them by the parties to this agreement or any other persons."

He refused to give turn over cell phone records that could have cleared or show illegal contact with a recruit.

Can someone give details besides phone conservations? I think DJ is a real good person and this really upsets me. He is a great coach and an awesome recruiter how can we get the real story? This makes me mad! People are cheating in NCAA sports and get better jobs out of it it's crazy.

DJ is a childhood friend of mine. He loves the game more than life itself. I find this hard to believe. Something else has to be going on. DJ has been around the game too long at every level from college to pro. I will say this, I'm proud of my boy for all of his accomplishments. He will land on his feet...you can believe that! Why is it that John Calapari can leave two schools in disarray with regards to violations and get a free pass to a dream job but something happens to DJ over some phones calls? Don't think to long it may upset you.

I know DJ McCarthy personally from his days in Nevada with the UNR Wolfpack. His family was in my neighborhood. DJ has such integrity that I find it hard to believe. Something else HAS to be going on here. I would be very surprised that he would do something like a recruitment violation. He knows WAY too much to be that stupid.

Typical Alleva. Let's fire the guy (I do not buy for a second that he resigned) before the whole story comes out. Scapegoating as usual. I bet the whole program was in on something fishy and they're covering it up by compensating McCarthy to pretend like it was all his fault. I could be wrong, but I doubt it.
