The LSU women's golf team struggled to a 15-over-par 303 on Friday in the first round of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Georgia.
The tournament is being played under the best ball format, which uses the four best scores on each hole from each team and is a rare format for formal competition.
The No. 6 Lady Tigers never seemed comfortable with the best ball dynamic, as the team posted four bogeys on hole 11, its first hole of the day, and never recovered to finish the first round in 18th place. LSU sits 19 shots behind the leader, Purdue, going into Saturday's second round.
Sophomore Mary Michael Maggio and senior All-American Megan McChrystal led the Lady Tigers with 6-over 78s on the tough UGA course.
Freshman Austin Ernst carded a 7-over-par 79 while junior Jacqueline Hedwall contributed an 8-over-par 80.
The Lady Tigers begin the second of three rounds Saturday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
