Information Technology Services announced the department will begin charging a $50 fine for illegally sharing media files through an LSU network.

Effective Aug. 1, if ITS is notified by the Recording Industry Association of America of someone downloading illegally on a hard wire LSU network, the student or employee will receive a $50 fine.

The fine is similar to a parking or library fee that will show up on a person's fee bill in their PAWS account, said Sheri Thompson, IT planning and communications officer.

"The reason is to deter people from doing it," Thompson said.
