The Ku Klux Klan will be among the masses descending on Oxford this Saturday when the Tigers play the Rebels.

Shane Tate, the North Mississippi great titan for the Mississippi White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, confirmed via e-mail the KKK will rally on Ole Miss’ campus in protest of the Ole Miss Chancellor Dan Jones’ decision to remove “From Dixie with Love” from the Ole Miss band’s song selection.

“From Dixie with Love” is one of Ole Miss’ traditional songs on game day, and the student section has chanted “the South will rise again” during the song for years, said Brian Ferguson, alumni chairman of the Colonel Reb foundation.

The controversy began last month when the Ole Miss Associated Student Body passed a resolution in favor of discontinuing chanting “the South will rise again” to replace it with “to hell with LSU.” The resolution was never fully enacted because it was not signed by the proper officials after passing the senate, said Peyton Beard, Ole Miss Associated Student Body director of athletics.

The student section largely ignored the resolution and other attempts to stop the chant, continuing the chant during “From Dixie with Love,” said Ole Miss English junior Dean Julius.

After a written warning by the Ole Miss chancellor, the student section’s continued chanting resulted in Jones banning “From Dixie with Love” last week, said Barbara Lago, Ole Miss director of media and public relations.

“We cannot even appear to support those outside our community who advocate a revival of segregation,” Jones said in a written address to the Ole Miss student body. “Consequently, I have asked the band not to play ‘From Dixie with Love’ at upcoming athletics events. The absence of this song will send a clear message that the university is neither facilitating nor indirectly condoning the chant.”

This decision to ban the song has drawn the attention of the KKK, which plans to protest the ban in full robes Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m, Tate said.

“We are coming to Ole Miss to say enough is enough on attacking our Christian, southern heritage and culture, and it’s time for every person to have a right to freedom of speech,” Tate said.

Lago confirmed Ole Miss has been contacted by the KKK and said the group has the right to voice its opinions as long as it doesn’t interfere with university activity or the personal rights of others.

“We aren’t coming there to cause problems or cause trouble,” Tate said. “Trouble has already been caused by a handful at Ole Miss, including the black student body president, who wants to shape Ole Miss into yet another liberal sodomite college.”

Julius said he continued the chant despite the resolution because he felt he was carrying on a tradition.

Christopher Cox, a black student at Ole Miss, said he agrees with the chancellor that the chant is offensive, but he doesn’t think the students chanting it are racist.

“I don’t see it necessarily as racist,” Cox said. “There is a disconnect between the people who are chanting it and the people who are hearing it and taking it into a different context. The students who do want the chant feel its tradition, while others who want it removed feel the chant is a support for a past we have moved far from.”

Enough all ready... I think people have to step out of their own shoes in order to understand others point of view. I am Caucasian, and there is no way I would attend a majority African American school if such behavior is carrying on, on campus. College is a school of higher learning. In order to move forward, you make the adjustments... period. I feel bad for the blacks who have to endure these behaviors. As if slavery wasn't bad enough, grow up people think for a minute... just sit back and think... reverse the situation. Or better yet reverse the history and see how defensive you become.

Folks, does anyone here remember Chucky Mullins? Why is Ole Miss always the target of racism? Those questioning as they see it the lack of Black professors and faculty-do you REALLY believe that's intentional? Could it be that that Blacks don't apply for such positions at Ole Miss b/c they are led to believe by our media that we are all racists? What is the reason for this? Racism-BS!! Come on! And it's "racist" not rasist as in a previous post. Ole Miss is a victim of reverse discrimination!

This is ridiculous, who cares about a chant regarding the Civil War. Much to do about nothing, we need to stop focusing on this nonsense and start focusing on things that are meaningful. It's a chant people, who cares? As for the KKK, I believe they have every right to demonstrate, I actually applaud their honesty regarding their beliefs. I obviously disagree with many of them but let them speak and be heard. Its time to be open and honest about our cultural differences and stop hiding them in the closet.

I believe that to have pride in your school you have to have tradition. Without tradition it takes the charm out of your school and doesn't give students as much reason to have spirit. You can't go around changing everything trying to make other people happy because at the end of the day not everyone is completely happy. Tradition should be left alone. Its part of the school's history just as the Civil War, WWII, and the Civil Rights Movement are all a part of history. When you take it away you are left with nothing. HIstory and tradition shape us into who we are today. If people are offended by the line "The South will rise again" just simply don't say that part in the chant. If some students don't like it and are offended but realize the people saying it aren't saying it out of hate or being racist then I don't see the problem. Be proud of your school and its traditions.

The name "OLE MISS shouid be changed! The name has every thing to do with slavery, ole miss is the name that slaves called the plantion owner's wife. Even though the name actually means Alter mater, it is a rasist name and should be changed.

"The Alabama Christian Klan"

I suppose you believe that there's an "Alabama" section in Heaven? Or, perhaps, there's an "Alabama" section in hell.

The school should give the KKK the opportunity to protest on the field during warmups.

First, I find it offensive that the KKK continue to claim their beliefs as “Christian and southern heritage”.
Second, How can anyone who thoroughly thinks this through say that it is not okay for students to chant but it is okay for the KKK to march? Freedom of speech is not selective. Just because one finds something offensive doesn’t give them the right to bully it away from someone who may have a different view of things. The irony here is just ludicrous. Such is the way of the “liberals” (defn: a political or social philosophy advocating the freedom of the individual). They are so afraid of offending people that they have forgotten their cause. The KKK is so uneducated that they don’t realize that being liberal actually means giving them the right to their beliefs. Sigh.

The students should be allowed to chant what they want and the KKK should be allowed to march as they please (with a permit, of course). If I were a student there I would organize a chant without music just to send a message to the chancellor.

You can bet your bottom dollar the K.K.K.'s best and brightest will be attending the rally Saturday, you will probably see a virtual brain trust of MIT bound geaux gitters some real smart cookies, deep thinkers and intellectuals bigots in the bosom of Klan country. Hopefully they have bought their Ole Miss season ticket way ahead of time. There is NO truth to the rumor that folks who chose to wear their Klan outfit to the football game will be admitted early. But somebody some vendor is giving a bag of pork rinds to everyone who wears his Klan costume to the Ole Miss game.
I wonder how Les Miles is going to explain what happens to our beloved TIGERS Saturday afternoon. If Gary Crowtan's "SWINE FLU" offense will stumble then bumble and fumble another totally embarrassing loss to Ole Miss. ? You know they will. Or maybe this will be THE game of the year. LSU will totally reverse the way they have been playing and suddenly start playing with confidence ? Most likely Houston Nutt will humiliate Les Miles AGAIN this year. I hope the TIGERS prove me wrong, make me eat my words.

What is so rascist about chanting "The South Will Rise Again", i mean c'mon, people who chant it ain't it rascist, its tradition and we should be able to say it, chant it, sing it, or whatever. They took Colonel Reb away and now this, before long it will be rascist to say Hotty Toddy.

we should not foget our history but at the same time we dont have to embrace negatives aspects of our history. we need to continue moving on from negative events that have happened. "the south will rise again" meaning the slavery of human beings is definately something that needs to be left behind.

I grew up in Mississippi and I graduated from Ole Miss and I agree whole heartedly with Christopher Cox's comment. The people chanting "The South will rise again" are singing it out of tradition today, NOT OUT OF HATE! The people saying the chant 50+ yrs ago may have had hate behind it. Regardless of what city, state, or nation in which you reside, some form of "hate" is inevitable. As sad as it is, "Hate" happens everyday and Ole Miss DOES NOT promote hate. For a school that prides itself on tradition, every bit of tradition has been striped from us. Sooner or later, we're going to be a school without a sense of pride or tradition and only a name...if that's not taken too. As for those KKK members, they need to be locked up...end of story!
