University alumnus and local attorney Gordon Pugh committed suicide on the levee near Skip Bertman Drive and the LSU Veterinary School on Monday.

Pugh was pronounced dead at 6:54 p.m., according to Don Moreau, chief of operations at the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner's Office. Pugh died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

A passerby reported the incident, said Maj. Lawrence Rabalais, LSU Police Department spokesman.

Pugh was a partner at Breazeale, Sachse & Wilson law firm for 43 years, and served on many local community boards.

His son, Gordon Pugh Jr., committed suicide last year, Moreau said.

St. Alban's Chapel on campus is the only church open 24 hours a day. It's always there when needed.

let me get heavy for a moment....
I am the mother of a child who ended his life. All I wanted to do after his death was be with him. I had a lot of responsibilities here but my son was my no#1 responsibility and I wanted to comfort him and be near him. As illogical as that may sound, this is my reality.

Suicide is not about wanting to die. It's about wanting the pain to stop. Gordon's pain grew large and heavy.

I want to know more about Gordon Jr. how old was he? who was he? it's easy to know who Gordon Pugh Sr. was. He was, if nothing else accomplished. But if anyone knows about his son, please post it. I'm certain he was a bright, gifted, sensitive son. ...

"When you commit suicide you think they care?"

Foamheart, it's not so much that everyone may care, and I have no idea if they do, but considering the levee near the vet school is a pretty well visited area from bikers and joggers, I think plenty of people may wonder what happened or went on with a gun shot ... do i personally care? no, not much at all. but i'm sure some people wanted to know.

regardles... reveille did the job right here.

it's been in all the papers, the Reveille isn't reporting anything that hasn't already been posted all over the internet this morning - good grief!!!

@lsu student -- if he wanted to keep his business private he wouldn't have killed himself in a public area.

lsu student -- you must not have much common sense...

when you commit suicide in a public place, it automatically becomes the public's business ... if they took their own life quietly in their own home, it wouldn't be news. but when a gun shot goes off on the levee and a body is there, that's a matter of public concern and interest.

most -- if not all -- local/community newspapers report suicides in public places but ignore those done in private.

Kudos to the Reveille and the writer for writing this since it's never an easy thing to have to report. i'm sure they don't "love throwing out people's business" especially when it's something as tragic as this.
