LSU football fans voted third most obnoxious in NCAA

Tiger faithful proud of enthusiasm

Be careful if you stroll around campus on gameday wearing anything other than purple and gold.

"We love football, and we love LSU," said James Hollier, biological engineering sophomore. "Anyone who gets in our way to prevent us from winning is kind of ruining that spirit."

Hollier, an avid football fan, said LSU fans can be more dedicated and aggressive than other teams.

Recently, FoxSports.com compiled a list of the top-10 "most obnoxious fan bases" in college football. LSU ranked No. 3 behind only Notre Dame and Michigan.

The Web site criticizes Tiger fans for, among other things, changing "Go" to "Geaux" on LSU apparel.

Fox Sports also writes: "Dare to play them in their own stadium and you'll be doused with beer and ‘Tiger Bait' chants."

But LSU students like Mark Davis, mechanical engineering sophomore, are not ashamed of their traditions, cheers or changed spellings.

"We're famous for it," Davis said of the chant.

Hollier said an inebriated, older crowd and rowdy student body create a rough atmosphere for visitors.

"Even during tailgating we chant," Hollier said. "We give any fans of opposing teams a hard time."

Fans visiting Tiger Stadium are not the only ones who experience firsthand the enthusiasm of the Tiger faithful. LSU fans' reputation extends beyond the capital city. Just ask Ole Miss history sophomore Devin Jerome.

"LSU fans are hated for being over the top," Jerome said.

Casey Ball, LSU history freshman, recalls one such "over-the-top" event that occurred after a game.

"[Some LSU fans] had made dummies of certain players and ripped them to shreds," Ball said. "To me, that's a little obsessive."

Samantha Power, LSU business freshman, said obsession is simply a by-product of enthusiasm.

"I just think people get really excited about LSU football," Power said. "Sometimes people get carried away."

So carried away that some LSU fans can't even keep their pants on.

"One fan went on the field and mooned the whole stadium," Ball said.

Some students, including kinesiology freshman Amanda Maurin, also said a winning team makes it easy for fans to get overly excited.

"It drives more people to the games and makes everything louder," Maurin said.

The defending national champion Tigers have a recent winning streak going, posting a 36-6 record since coach Les Miles arrived in 2005.

Power said she thinks recent LSU success brought out envy in opposing teams.

"They're just jealous of us," Power said.

But Davis thinks Tiger fans are too dedicated for that to be the case.

"Whether we win or lose, we're going to support our team," Davis said.

The student section in Tiger Stadium has a history of being loud. But lately the issue has been content, not volume.
"Some of the chants come off vulgar," Davis said.

Current NFL players Glenn Dorsey and Jacob Hester published a letter to fans last October in The Daily Reveille, saying "vulgar language directed at our opponents by the student section has been disappointing and embarrassing to our school."

Hollier said he was proud of the players' integrity to call out the student section after LSU's 28-24 win against Florida last season.

"It probably was necessary," Hollier said. "People were calling [Florida junior quarterback Tim] Tebow's cell phone number and chanting ‘Tebow sucks.'"

But Jerome said these types of cheers are nothing out of the norm in the Southeastern Conference.

Davis said a few incidents, like the language at the Florida game, might rub fans of opposing schools the wrong way. The rest of the time, he said, LSU fans respect their opponents and even shake hands with opposing fans after a game.

"For the most part, Tiger fans are well behaved," Davis said.

The swamp people are the most vile, disgusting bunch I've ever encountered. Alabama gutted that team worse than Katrina flushed out NO.

As a Gator fan, I've been to Tiger Stadium 8 times and I've had a great time each trip. Fans were very hospitable at the tailgates and the food is awesome. Definitely had to endure some tigerbaits, but it was goodnatured - and I'm happy to deal with that for a free meal. I had a few encounters with drunken idiots, but it happens everywhere - even Vanderbilt. Without question, Bama fans are the most classless group of fans in college football - and it's not even close.

No fan base is more vile, vindictive, vulgar and vicious than LSU. In snobbery they are a close second to the UNC Tarheels. I always pull for the SEC unless LSU is involved, and in that case I would pull for the Iranians even if they played LSU. LSU do not know how lose gracefully and more importantly how to win gracefully. Best of luck to the Tide in the BCS championship game.

I currently attend Louisiana Tech, and I went to the last LSU Tech game a couple of years ago. Tech knew going in that it was unlikely that we were going to win, but there was no major animosity. A lot of Tech students are LSU fans as well. In fact, my entire family are LSU fans and I've never had a problem with LSU until this game. I wore my Louisiana Tech jersey to the game, and as I was walking around campus, not only were the fans screaming "Tiger Bait", but many of them were yelling "Fuck you!" and flipping me off! It was completely uncalled for. That's not excitement for your team; that's just rude. Since then, I have been an adamant support of any team playing against LSU. I have never seen a meaner group of people than LSU fans.
LSU fans are lame

I have been to many different conferences and many different games with "entusiastic" fan bases. Without a doubt HANDS DOWN...LSU WINS. Not only do your fans taunt before a game, but I watched your fans on multiple (too many times to count) occasions taunt fans after a game that were just trying to go home after a disappointing loss. Profane language, racism, getting in other fan's space etc. If you guys are proud of that then you must also be proud of looking like uneducated alcholic hicks deserving of all of the trailer trash stereotypes that EVERYONE warned me about prior to attending the game. I was encouraging my daughter to attend LSU previous to witnessing this and I would never desire to have her go to a school that is PROUD of such obnoxious behavior. Like I said, I witnessed everywhere throughout the game. I am not talking about the game itself. Also, does Louisiana have an obesity problem? It was rare that I viewed LSU fans that actually looked like they have ever exercised in their entire life. What is wrong with the fan base of this school to be proud of behavior that just makes people think you are sick in the head?

That fox report said we have a cupcake schedule. I say who cares we won the national championship. We don't want to go back to losing the opening game to Texas A&M and having a crapping season like we did in the 80s and 90s. I think these folks are just jealous of us. We are going to dominant this year. Geaux Tigers!!

Only an LSU fan could be proud of being named 3rd most obnoxious. I love how LSU fans support their team win or lose though! (TROY 2008)

If you can't handle Rammer-Jammer, you shouldn't field a team in the SEC. The LSU chants are probably the most obnoxious but it's part of the game. I hate it when they do that and my team is down but looking back on it, I wouldn't trade any of it. Now, I won't say KW is outright lying because I do realize fans can go over the line anywhere but it is not representative of any SEC fans I know no matter the school. Going over the line is assaulting someone. Yes, I am an obnoxious Bama fan and I will razz anyone (as well as take a razzing) but I would never assault nor tolerate anyone doing that to a fan from an opposing team.

I think the most classless chant I have even heard Mr." Nic Saban" is the one sung by Alabama lead by their faithful Two Dollar Band..."We just beat the hell out of you!"... Wow at least our band doesn't lead a chant like that. Y’all will always be the most hated college in the nation so basically it sucks to be you! Get ready to be demolished by Florida! GEAUX TIGERS!

Last time Alabama hosted us, a group of students approached me and my friend, called us sl*ts and spit on us. We didn't know these people, we were just wearing LSU t-shirts. Yeah, really. So who's classless?

I like KW's comment. Also, there's a difference in being over the top and rude. You're always going to encounter some rude fans and some very hospitable fans anywhere you go. Plus I never want to hear any Alabama fan say ANYTHING about other schools being rude. At last year's game, the UA Greek section CHEERED when Glenn Dorsey got hurt and was lying on the field and the trainers came out. And it definitely wasn't clapping when he got up either ... as soon as the announcer said it's LSU player Glenn Dorsey, they clapped and yelled. Florida was pretty obnoxious this year, but nothing compares to the classlessness displayed by the UA Greeks.
