Check lsureveille.com during the break for previews of next semester's columnists. The temptation of a semestrial review is to spend so much time looking back that we fail to let our readers know how we plan to move forward. This is our chance to give you a glimpse of the faces you'll see every week in our opinion pages throughout the next semester.
Fall 2007 has been the best of times and the worst of times. When I arrived at the University a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed freshman, the size and scope of this place intimidated me. I could hardly remember the names of the buildings in the Quad. I didn't know where the dining hall was.
2007 was a decent year for movies in Baton Rouge. Unfortunately, not many people care. After United Artists' Siegen Village closed this past year, I grew scared Baton Rouge theaters would offer nothing but mass-produced slapstick films, romantic comedies and action flicks.
Forget the holiday season. 'Tis the season of women's basketball. That's right. Everyone's attention should be on the LSU Lady Tigers and their attempt at a fifth consecutive Final Four run and, hopefully, their first national championship. Van Chancellor has the holiday spirit.
In my first column, I discussed how the foundations of conservative thought are based on limited government with personal and economic freedom. Since being introduced to the two dominant ideologies at the beginning of my freshman year, I have always thought of myself as conservative.
A few months ago, I did what should have been done so long ago. I sent a letter to Cory Matthews, who documented most of his high school and college days in his somewhat suspect television documentary, "Boy Meets World," asking him how to deal with life. Dear Cory, I've always watched your show looking for advice during these formative years.
Don't let the winter holidays keep you out of touch on what's going on at the University. I'm proud to announce The Daily Reveille will keep busy during the winter break. We plan to update our Web site almost daily with campus news. This is new. In years past, The Daily Reveille as a news source shut down during the holiday season.
As semester ends and holidays begin, keep troops in mind This past September, ten current and former LSU students were deported to Iraq. Nick Toben, Jeffery Gagliano, David Abney, Chris Inman, Andrew Bolton, Caanon Heard, Albert Chee, Joe Guillory, James Rumfola and Garret Dubois are in the 3/23 Weapons Company of the United States Marine Corps.
