Linda Moorhouse directs the band from the top of a ladder.

Linda Moorhouse will no longer fill the Tiger Band director position she recently accepted when the fall season swings into action.

Moorhouse, who currently holds the associate director of bands position, accepted an offer for a position at the University of Illinois as a visiting associate professor of music, according to Pamela Matassa, communications director for the College of Music and Dramatic Arts.

Roy King, assistant director of bands, will likely lead Tiger Band in the fall with the help of a visiting faculty member and current faculty and students, according to Matassa.

"My personal thought is that Linda just wanted a break," she said. "A lot has been going on this past year, and she just needed a change."

Moorhouse — who is leaving after 25 years of service to the University band programs — announced Friday in an email to Tiger Band members that she was leaving, citing "an unsolicited and unexpected offer to join the UI band division two weeks ago" and "the realization of my situation here at LSU" as the reasons for her departure.

Moorhouse's announcement comes slightly more than two months after the College of Music and Dramatic Arts announced her appointment as Tiger Band director.

Matassa said Moorhouse is electing to leave the University despite the promotion and a 10-percent raise. Illinois' offer is for a one-year, non-tenured position.

"Linda was offered another job at a more stable institution," Matassa said, referring to the budget-cut crisis the University is currently dealing with. "They're not feeling the same heat. Maybe it was in her best interest."

Moorhouse's decision will also follow the official retirement of Director of Bands Frank Wickes, which takes effect this month.

Tiger Band — which has 325 members — will not face a decrease in size or funding amid budget cuts, according to Matassa.

"There will be no lack of candidates fighting to take over Tiger Band," she said. "It's the biggest, best band in the country."

Matassa said no official timeframe has been established to determine Moorhouse's replacement.

I am very close to the situation with Dr. Moorhouse's departure. It is a shame that the Dean of MD&A has handled Professor Wickes' retirement with such reckless abandon. It is apparent that he and his ilk are determined to dimantle the Department of Bands and brand it with thier thumbprint and controlling arm. I do take exception with anyone who believes that Roy King is not up to the task. I have known him since the start of his career and I can say WITHOUT RESERVATION that Tiger Band will be in capable hands. Mr. King's associaition with the band department goes back to the days of Nick Rouse. Nobody is in a better position to guard the reputation and traditions of Tiger Band than Mr. King. He has earned the chance for this promotion and I strongly urge everyone's greatest consideration of his appointment to this position. I can promise without any worry that he will deliver. He is the one commodity that the School of Music has left to prevent a total implosion of the GBFTL.

Mr. Sixkiller gives the tactful, professional, and polite comment. . . Illinois really is a great opportunity for Dr. Moorhouse. Her drive and compassion will surely take her future endeavors to undoubted success, but in her past she leaves a horrid neglect. No offense to Mr. King, but this is the end of an era. The scrutinizing eye that maintained Tiger Band's excellence over the past several years travels to Illinois with Dr. Moorhouse. It is a shame that Dean Kaptain didn't exert the extent of his authority or much less effort to try to keep her at LSU. It seems he doesn't see Tiger Band or even the Department of Bands as much of a priority. The vast abyss that Dr. Moorhouse and Mr. Wickes leave in the Department of Bands will resonate a sour note in the ears of LSU sports and music fans for years to come. With the decision to leave Mr. Wickes' position vacant, it was clearly not a lack of funding that let Dr. Moorhouse through the fingers of the administration. It truly is a shame.
