Former U.S. Senator John Breaux endorsed fellow Democrat Don Cazayoux at a news conference Friday afternoon as the best candidate in the May 3 special election to fill Louisiana's 6th Congressional seat.
Breaux said he believes Cazayoux will break the legislative gridlock created by partisan politics and and work across the aisle to represent his constituents.
"What you do to break that gridlock is to elect people who are moderate mainstream officials who can work with both sides," Breaux said. "And as I've said, neither party has a monopoly on good ideas."
Cazayoux is campaigning against Republican candidate Woody Jenkins, independents Peter Aranyosi and Ashley Casey and Constitution Party member Randall Hayes.
"I'm proud to have [Breaux's] endorsement," Cazayoux said. "And I hope to go to Washington and behave in a similar manner in his approach to policy and standing with Louisiana."
Cazayoux is an eight-year veteran of the state legislature. Breaux served as a Senator representing Louisiana from 1987 until 2005.
Breaux said Louisiana constituents are interested in improving education and are concerned about the looming recession. Breaux repetitively stressed Cazayoux's ability to span party lines working in the best interest of Louisiana.
"You don't want a robot to go to Congress," Breaux said. "You want a person who can think for himself and think for the people of this district."
