The Women's Center will be addressing aspects of stem cell research tomorrow in the Grand Salon of the French house from noon to 1:30 p.m.

The discussion will include a variety of panelists: Dr. Jeffrey Gimble of the stem cell biology laboratory at Pennington Biomedical Research Institute, Noelie Day of University Presbyterian church and Rabbi Zamek of Beth Shalom Synagogue.

The panel will be discussing the scientific aspects of stem cell research and the actual procedures used in these studies. They will also discuss the moral and ethical responsibilities associated with using these technologies to cure certain deadly illnesses.

Rachel Hebert, volunteer at the Women's Center, has helped in the planning of the discussion panel.

"We developed a speaker series in order to address what we perceive to be a real need on campus," Hebert said.

"We found that many LSU students claim opposition to stem cell research but possess a strikingly small amount of accurate or factual information on the subject," she said.

The stem cell research discussion is one of three discussions that the Women's Center has planned for the semester. The next two discussions will be on comprehensive sex education and abortion.

"Our goal is to educate the LSU community as well as to spur informed dialogue and debate about these issues on campus," Hebert said.
