Alumnus gives view on Elmasraya's column
First of all let me start by saying that I agree there should be limits to free speech, slander, lies, etc. However, I do not think there should be limits on free speech when it comes to religion. I did not read Mr. Lumetta's column, and I do not agree when he says that American culture is better than others. I do agree with him that Western culture as a whole is better than Middle Eastern culture. Better because we have freedom of speech. We have the rule of law; laws based on previous experience, checks and balances, and the discretion of the judges that enforce them. It is not like Sharia law which is based on a "holy book" that is infallible according to you and which hasn't changed since 600AD. That's why we in the west don't have the state-sponsored execution of homosexuals. Women who were raped are victims - unlike backward Middle Eastern cultures that stone rape victims to death. We teach science in our society, not dogma - except Kansas, of course. Regarding blasphemous cartoons - I always think of blasphemy as a victimless crime. Mohamed is dead Shirien - I don't think he is going to be offended by some silly cartoons. In fact I know he won't be offended because he is dead. Also, if Allah is powerful enough to create the universe, why would he be offended by some Scandinavian artists? Your attribution of human feelings to an all-powerful creator shows your ignorance of psychology, philosophy and science. If you are offended, don't look at them. Finally, I find your religion offensive. I see it as backwards, woman-hating, self-hating, intolerant and destructive. That your so-called leaders call the Holocaust a hoax is abhorrent to me. I do not submit to the will of Allah because I do not believe in Allah. I will drink a beer whenever I damn feel like it. I will eat pork if I wish, and I reserve the right to criticize your silly medieval superstitions.
