George and Cindy Anthony prepare to speak during the memorial for 2-year-old Caylee Marie Anthony at First Baptist Orlando in Orlando, FL on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009. Caylee Anthony went missing in June 2008 and her remains were found in December, less than a mile from her home. Her mother Casey Anthony is in custody on charges of first degree murder of her child.

Modern TV news is one of the most pervasive and influential mediums of communication in the modern world.

As time passes, it seems increasingly likely it’s for the worst.

As television as a medium has matured, it has relied more on sensationalism and creating and maintaining a spectacle instead of reporting what is newsworthy.

Most of the time, the exercise seems somewhat academic — the concern of only media critics or mass communications professors.

But sometimes TV journalism simply crosses the line.

The most recent example is the case of Caylee Anthony, the missing 3-year old whose disappearance triggered a media frenzy. While authorities and volunteers searched for the girl, the media latched onto the case. Reporters were stationed semi-permanently outside of her house, and that of her grandparents’ — who became overnight celebrities of the most macabre kind.

Media personalities descended like vultures on the story, commenting religiously on the most minor developments — or lack thereof. CNN’s Nancy Grace — the drawling “defender of justice” — took up Anthony’s disappearance as her personal crusade, calling in as many officials involved with the case as she could — and promptly grilling them for having not already found her.

Tragically, Anthony’s skeletal remains were eventually found. Her mother, Casey Anthony, has been charged with her murder.

The story of this toddler’s death is undeniably a heart-breaking tragedy. It is totally appropriate that the story be told and that condolences are offered to the family for their loss.

What actually happened is not appropriate — what should have been a private tragedy was blown into a public spectacle.

The circus reached its absurd climax at the public memorial service — a service attended by more than 1,000 people and aired on CNN last Tuesday.

The service, in many ways, conflicts with a eulogy written by the slain girl’s grandmother saying, “The family is requesting that those with only the purest of hearts and truly honorable intentions attend the service for their beloved child.”

These words seem hypocritical for a eulogy delivered to CNN for national publication, in reference to a memorial set in a venue with capacity for 5,000.

Although no amount of sympathy can suffice for the Anthonys, their actions during this ordeal hardly seem like those who value the privacy of their mourning. While the media obsessed over Caylee Anthony, her grandparents made regular TV appearances.

Their publicist – yes, they had a publicist — quit in exasperation, citing “the Anthony family’s erratic behavior.”

Yet the Anthonys can hardly be blamed for this. Instead, the journalistic behemoth that is modern television bears the responsibility for offering a golden pedestal of hypocrisy almost impossible to avoid. After all, it seems foolish to ignore the chance for national attention, especially when that attention is nominally for your missing granddaughter.

The memorial service was occasionally filled with blatantly disrespectful material. One commentator obsessed over the buttons the family wore — one of which memorialized Caylee, the other showed support for the mother Casey.

When one of the commentators noticed the father wasn’t wearing one of the buttons, they immediately launched into rabid speculation, claiming this was evidence he believed his daughter had killed her son, and was dead to him.

Although the Anthony story is a tragic one indeed, this kind of coverage is not of respectful condolence, but of a shallow, sensationalist publicity stunt.

In their quest for ratings, and to fill the insatiable maw that is a 24-hour news cycle, television networks will milk every ounce of drama out of a story — even if that means turning a private tragedy into a public spectacle.

If the anthonys hadnt lied and covered up for there murdering daughter and caused such chaos then maybe it would of went down differently...YOU cant simply blame media for all of this cindy and casey anthony along with the rest of that clan are criminals who brought all this upon themselves......I would love to see casey anthony hung high...oh yah but blaming every eye on them solely on the cameras watching them is ridiculous...they have done this to themselves....HANG HER HIGH

the service was supposed to be a public memorial for all those who helped search and fall in love with the child to grieve. it was a slap in the face to all who attended to see the pic of caylee posted on a mantel (next to a candle and teddy bear ) with her MOTHER casey anthony in the picture!! it was supposed to be to grieve for caylee, not casey the mom who partied for 30 days after the death of her child and never told anyone her child was "kidnapped". Innocent until proven guilty is a good thing and in this case it's already been proven she is guilty. Her actions speak for her guilt.

The media frenzy was fed extensively by the Anthony family. This dysfunctional family clearly courted the attention and when factual evidence that might incriminate their daughter became available, they then became very critical of the media, and the organizations trying to find the baby and provide justice for her. Their delusional belief that this child was kidnapped in light of hard forensic evidence was purely to "save" their murdering daughter. The fact is, the Antony's gave the public a reality show of their own creation. One must be careful of what they wish for!!!! Incidentally, the media did not publish anything to my knowlege regarding incest. That is conjecture related to different blogs. Or are the blogs , and not the media, really the issue of this article?

Casey Anthony is clearly a sad, pathetic, tragic product of never being held accountable, always being excused and forever allowed by this family. The parents who never expected or insisted this adult child to be accountable or responsible may look to themselves in great part each time they miss their grandchild. The author is correct--the media must STOP feeding and thereby rewarding the unhealthy, desperate need for attention and control displayed by this sad group of hooligan's (the A's, Padilla, and Baez included).

I have never seen so many factual errors in an analysis. This person does not even know the story of any of the Anthony's including Caylee. I kept thinking, this must be about a different case. How ridiculous to write this garbage.

I wish that the media would stop reporting anything about Casey or Caylee. This is such a tragedy and I am thankful that Caylee was found, but PLEASE let her rest now. I want to see justice for Caylee and I hope and pray that Casey's trail is not influenced by the media in any way. She doesn't deserve to be in the spotlight then or now and she know that she is guilty and she will meet her maker in the end.

The funeral was supposed to eulogize Caylee, but, no it turned to a spectacal, trying to save the dirty murdering fiend that sits in jail.

All of the A's were self serving in the fiasco

This is something that the Anthony's needed. Who cares who wore what button? This was absolutely without a doubt about Caylee. Instead of making the Anthony's the villains, put yourself in their position. They are not the ones who asked for all the media attention, it came to them and just because we (the public) do not have the answers we want does not give any one the right to speculate about any ones involvement or Caylee's paternity. You vultures are sick. I have sympathy for the Anthony family and continue to pray for every one of them. Their faith is their strength and every one of the nay saying bloggers out there are trying their damnedest to take it away. They are not looking for fame...If they could have Caylee back, they would go back to being a normal family again.

I think a lot of people felt Lee's actions at the Memorial "sealed the deal" about him either being Caylee's father (Casey DID, at one time, tell LE that Lee had often come into her br and made advances toward her -- but then, if her mouth is open she's lying, so who knows. OR, they feel had had something to do with covering for her. Maybe he moved the body to help her out? Who knows. I just, peraonally, dislike Cindy for being so critical of LE, Equuisearch, and anyone else who worked to so hard to find this child. She and Casey are two peas in a pod, IMO.

I don't think my first response posted so I'll try again: Casey and her family used the media to their advantage until it was in their advantage to attack it. If the defense thinks that attacking the media will get their client off their mistaken. Nothing but the forensics and Caseys' own behavior will point to her guilt. In the jail house tape lee tells Casey that mom (cindy) is working the media and Casey seems very pleased. But since the body was found it wasn't in their best interest to use the media but rather blame it. And who REPORTED incest between Lee and Casey. I only heard of it through the comments by people on blogs and such. Nancy Grace herself didn't even question incest (well not on air anyways).

I disagree. If there wasn't as much media attention, little Caylee Anthony's death might have been swept under the rug as just another missing child case. There wouldn't have been the intesive searches, and her body might never have been found. Zanaida Gonzales would have been just another emigree whose life was ruined by the lies of a sociopathic, spoiled young woman. How many other missing children cases go unsolved? It's sad that not every case can receive that kind of attention.

What points to Caseys' guilt more than anything (besides the forensics) was her own behavior while her daughter was "missing" and her behavior after her MOM called authorities. If the defense thinks blaming the media will get her off, their mistaken. I bet the statement from Casey stating that she didn't want a public memorial is a defense strategy that they will later use in their attempt to blame media. Caseys' own family put themselves in the media (courting tv reporters everyday) until it was no longer in their own interest. And who REPORTED incest between lee and Casey? It wasn't reported but rather questioned in blogs on the internet. Nancy Grace never mentioned incest. I don't believe that lee is the dad but do believe that it was Caseys' and Lees' own behavior that put that question in peoples mind (besides Caseys' own comments to friends that Lee tried having sex with her). Casey will have her day in court and nothing but her own words and actions will convince a jury (well that and all the forensics pointing to nobody else but her.

Cindy Anthony begged for publicity-she thought Caylee had been kidnapped. What kept this story in the news was the fact that no one could have made this stuff up. A very dysfunctional family, a sociopath daughter who doesn't ever report her 2 year old missing, the ex-cop Grandfather who doesn't step-up and take charge in trying to get information from his daughter, a very demanding Grandmother who rules everybody in the family and the son/uncle who seems "detached" When the family got help from Equusearch and Padilla-they treated them badly. Never bothering to even thank them. Casey's "issues" have a lot to do with people being attached to this case. I really hope justice works in this trial.

Yes, Kady, you are correct that the media only reports what viewers demand, but you have neglected to mention the monstrous exploitation of the cases at hand. Even though it is obvious that Casey Anthony is guilty of involvement of some type (it isn't my place to specify EXACTLY what), wasn't it overkill to report that Caylee was a child of incest between Casey and Lee?
Some people might say, "Whatever, she deserves it."
I want justice as much as the next person, but humiliating and accusing Casey of activities like sleeping around with her brother is not justice. That is making money off misery. Do you really think that Casey was the only one suffering from this coverage? What about George, who just wanted to get away, momentarily contemplating killing himself, and now the media's been following him around and reporting on his psychological state of mind.
It doesn't change our lives. We watch this as if it were a show. As emotional as you or I may feel about the case, it doesn't change the fact that its entertainment of a most morbid type.

i agree with this however..the statement.."When one of the commentators noticed the father wasn’t wearing one of the buttons, they immediately launched into rabid speculation, claiming this was evidence he believed his daughter had killed her son, and was dead to him." ... it's not his daughter's son who's dead.. it's his daughter's daughter..

"When one of the commentators noticed the father wasn’t wearing one of the buttons, they immediately launched into rabid speculation, claiming this was evidence he believed his daughter had killed her son, and was dead to him."

You mean "killed her daughter"?

I don't blame the media for the coverage of this, and many other cases. If so many people were not watching, calling the shows, commenting and caring, the media would move on to something else. The media just reports what the viewers are asking them to report.
