Last weekend was one of the most surreal experiences of my life, and I’m not talking about the football team’s heartbreaking loss to Alabama.

I’m talking about the hours I spent around campus tailgating — but not as a regular Tiger.

For this game, a fellow staffer and I, armed with a video camera and microphone, ditched our normal attire, threw on crimson-and-white sweatshirts and walked through campus to see what it would be like behind enemy lines.

Most people know how aggressive LSU’s fans are. But to see first hand just how hostile and offensive Tiger fans can be really opened up my eyes.

The final video of our experiences on lsureveille.com is an accurate depiction of what we encountered, but it was only the tip of the iceberg. Here are a few things we couldn’t fit in the video.

Vulgar language has never really bothered me, and the incessant “Tiger-baiting” and
“Around the bowl and down the hole, Roll Tide, Roll” mocking were the least of my worries.

Almost every tailgate spot we visited greeted us with the same expressions. The women called us “bitches,” and the men called us “cunts” followed by the traditional “Rip. Rip. Rip. Rap. Rap. Rap. You ‘Bama girls got the clap, clap, clap!” cheer.

And if that wasn’t enough, the amount of times we were spit on also struck a nerve.
Spitting on someone is one of the most degrading things a human being can do to another.
Verbal abuse is powerful, but when things get physical, that’s a little more effective.

The most significant physical encounters were from male Tiger fans. And they all involved some kind of inappropriate gestures. We were groped and squeezed by just about every guy we interviewed.

Not only did things get physical for us personally, our camera equipment also has some bruises as well. I can’t even count the number of times a Tiger fan ran up to the camera and shouted expletives or just yelled at the lens.

We witnessed what other teams’ fans encounter every home game and just how animated Tiger fans are before a big game.

But maybe we need to tone it down — just a bit.

LSU fans in general are akin to the type of family that moves into an upscale neighborhood and property value drops due to their trashyness and lack of respect for others and their property.
basically they are country folk who moved to the big city and don't know how to behave.

I bet you only commented on 10% of the whole tailgating crowd...What a shame to try and put a bad face on "ALL" LSU fans...

Call complete B.S. on getting spit on. Slobbered on maybe, but intentionally spit on? C'mon.

I've been to most stadiums in the SEC and everyone has their share of stupid fans and guess what WDM the putrid place of Tuscaloosa, Alabama has them as well.

I'm a Bama fan and though Baton Rouge was a great place. We were greeted with food and drinks all day and never had any problems with the LSU fans.

I'm a bama fan who visited Baton Rouge for the first time Saturday and i must say that Tiger stadium has the best Athmosphere in the nation. The fans were great, we were offered beer, whisky chips drinks and other cooked food. We had a LSU fan that said that he did not blame Saban for leaving, He said that he would leave BR for Miami for the money that the Fins paid Saban. I got the Tiger bait two times. Once from a 5 year old who was walking with his dad. I yelled back at him "Good Luck litlle Tiger". His dad told us that if Bama wins we had better win it all. I told him that I was pulling for LSU in the NC game and i was chanting S-E-C with the tiger fans we they won it. The second time we got the tiger bait chant was walking to the game and it only lasted 10-15 seconds. I did not get spit on or shoved. We parked in the Hayfield and no one keyed my car or pulled any alabama decorations off. I must say that the LSU fans were better than the Tennessee fans a few weeks ago. I got the bird less than five minuets from arriving in Knoxville. Also in knoxville a Frat was parking cars and told us that we could not park if we were going to tailgate. I only wish that the bama fans would get into the games like the LSU fans. It is cool to see the whole stadium bobing their hands when the band plays neck. Also I liked the Oh we oh chant after LSU scored and we were in a TV time out. The LSU fans stay into the game from kick off to the end.

The problem is that you sought out this kind of behavior, Gerri, knowing where to find it. Greek students are the worst on campus, and you went straight into the lions' den. Of course the elitist students who get catered to by the University are going to act like they can't be held accountable because they can't be!

We're all just pawns in a campus game run by Greeks, for Greeks. If you haven't realized that by now, you're not awake.

I stopped attending games in Baton Rouge many years ago. I honestly felt my life was in danger there more than once and decided years ago it just isnt worth it to travel to that putrid place.

I have been to every stadium in the SEC and have never faced more childish and criminal behavious as I did this past weekend. I am an Alabama fan and attended the game. I was very careful when we arrived to head straight to the stadium, keep my mouth shut and only look forward. During my walk, I was cussed at constantly, shoved several times, mooned twice and spat on atlease twice. Your fans give the SEC a bad name and you should all be ashamed and need to grow up.

What gives? The three minute video was tame compared to the written article. Are we being had. I have personally witnessed much worse at other stadiums. Ga. 2004, when the fans refused to let a large group of us leave the stadium; the burning of an LSU fan's cap and cursing much worse than this. I got through, looked at other Georgia fans separated from us by a fence and asked, "Did you see that." The response was a the great American salute.

Was our first trip to Baton Rouge and it was a great experience. We totally enjoyed the city, especially the capitol building, the food and the people. We have been to other SEC venues, Awbren for instance, and were threatened and ashamed for their actions. The LSU fans were most hospitable and will certainly be a place that we will visit again. Tiger Stadium is AWESOME!!!

Hey Gerri and the rest of you editorial board pretenders,
It was obvious you had decided on your perspective for this story before you ever put on the crimson tide shirt. This was not objective journalism. This was journalism trying to make a point, that LSU fans are obnoxious to opponents. Then you went out and got video to support that point of view. Notice you had no video of people being kind, inviting, having fun, etc. You wouldn't know good journalism if it slapped you in the face. You are victims; Victims of a very poor education from a bunch of academic frauds that wouldn't know how to act in a real newsroom. You put words in your story for shock value that your censor software won't allow me to use. Hypocrites!

The fact that people are giving mixed reviews of LSU fans sheds light on the biased nature of this article. All of the people caught on tape were students, more specifically Greek students. Before you point the finger at all LSU fans, get the facts. After the game, I got into a very civil conversation with a Bama fan at Q'doba; he said he and his son did encounter "rude" LSU fans, but were mostly greeted with the traditional "Tiger Bait."

I tail gated all day saturday in the rv section and had the time of my life. LSU fans were great. Even to and from the stadium and during the game I had a great time. Yeah, there was those few obnoxious fans but we have those in T-town too. I would rate it a 10 out of 10.
