Last weekend was one of the most surreal experiences of my life, and I’m not talking about the football team’s heartbreaking loss to Alabama.

I’m talking about the hours I spent around campus tailgating — but not as a regular Tiger.

For this game, a fellow staffer and I, armed with a video camera and microphone, ditched our normal attire, threw on crimson-and-white sweatshirts and walked through campus to see what it would be like behind enemy lines.

Most people know how aggressive LSU’s fans are. But to see first hand just how hostile and offensive Tiger fans can be really opened up my eyes.

The final video of our experiences on lsureveille.com is an accurate depiction of what we encountered, but it was only the tip of the iceberg. Here are a few things we couldn’t fit in the video.

Vulgar language has never really bothered me, and the incessant “Tiger-baiting” and
“Around the bowl and down the hole, Roll Tide, Roll” mocking were the least of my worries.

Almost every tailgate spot we visited greeted us with the same expressions. The women called us “bitches,” and the men called us “cunts” followed by the traditional “Rip. Rip. Rip. Rap. Rap. Rap. You ‘Bama girls got the clap, clap, clap!” cheer.

And if that wasn’t enough, the amount of times we were spit on also struck a nerve.
Spitting on someone is one of the most degrading things a human being can do to another.
Verbal abuse is powerful, but when things get physical, that’s a little more effective.

The most significant physical encounters were from male Tiger fans. And they all involved some kind of inappropriate gestures. We were groped and squeezed by just about every guy we interviewed.

Not only did things get physical for us personally, our camera equipment also has some bruises as well. I can’t even count the number of times a Tiger fan ran up to the camera and shouted expletives or just yelled at the lens.

We witnessed what other teams’ fans encounter every home game and just how animated Tiger fans are before a big game.

But maybe we need to tone it down — just a bit.

Kevin,
No I am not the elderly lady who threw beer on you! I would not conduct myself in that manner. Anytime we host another team in Tuscaloosa I treat them with the utmost kindess and southern hospitality the south has been known for. If you read my comments more carefully, then you would have noticed that I said "SOME OF THE LSU FANS". I am not stating that all of the LSU fans are animals. Just a few. And, yes we will forever have a love for Paul "BEAR" Bryant. He was an awesome coach and a great human being. We also are in awe of your former coach, Nick Saban. He is incredible!!! We are so lucky to have him. And I apologize for the Bama fan who threw beer on you. That is not good sportsmanship. As for myself, I walked over to a table of LSU fans and had a few drinks and we talked about football. I have always thought that the men from LSU are awesome. Don't make me regret saying that!

As a UAB grad I witnessed first hand the outrageous behaviors of LSU fans when we beat them at Homecoming a few years ago. I know they were upset, but the happenings in the parking lot afterwards were uncalled for.

I am so sorry. I had too much corndogs and it left a bad taste in my mouth. Next time I will wash it down with some mighty fine Schiltz to avoid spitting.

Sherry,

Where were you when that elderly lady threw a beer on me in "T-town". Is that what you think "class" is. Should I base all of Alabama on that one experience. Every fan base has it's jackass', and when you get 100,000+ people drinking in one area, a few lewd things will happen but I promise you this, the only complaints I have ever heard over the years about LSU tailgating being the worst yadda yadda yadda, were from a handful of Alabama fans. It's those same Alabama fans that tell of the "horrors" of LSU tailgating to out of conference fans but surprisingly, they all disagree. At least all the Bama fans I hosted had a great time, just like the thousands of others that were fed and hosted by LSU fans. One other note, you tell us to get over Saban, I have a suggestion, get over the Bear! Y'all seem to worship him like a god. Tuscaloosa is like Jonestown when it comes to Bear Bryant.

I still don't see any extremely bad behavior from the video, the article and video disagree. But if it did happen, all I have to say, if you look for trouble you'll find it, and that's anywhere. It's pretty pathetic what The Reveille has come to.

I am appalled by the outrageous behavior of some of the LSU fans. On the occasions that LSU came to Tuscaloosa; we welcomed them with hospitality and class. In a local restaurant here in Tuscaloosa, we had to witness a rowdy LSU fan carrying around a bloody headless Nick Saban. My advice is GET OVER IT! Coaches come and go all the time. Support your team but do it with CLASS!! I have family from Lousiana and I am ashamed of the way some of the fans conduct themselves. LSU has never looked worse to me!

Someone asked what all the 'Bama fans are doing here. In case it hasn't been mentioned yet, this article was read over the air on a local sports talk network program Thursday afternoon, with directions to find it here. Anything to stir folks up, I suppose.

that's hilarious. although it didn't seem to bad at the tailgate spot. i have to say i was expecting more. i guess i shouldve known better seeing as LSU's so-called "tradition" consists of pathetic fans, pathetic stadium, pathetic coach,... pathetic football team. what a joke. its only a matter of time. give it a few years and the lsu faithful will go back to being the group of overwhelmed onlookers, suffering from beat down after beat down by alabama year in and year out. the fans will mercyilessly give up hope and go back to watching their baseball team. oh wait.... they suck too now. nevermind.

As a Alabama Fan living in Tuscaloosa i heard about your article. Sad that any fans take their hate for the other team to hate the other teams fans. I had a scoutmaster who graduated from LSU and a very diehard fan! My scoutmaster was a fine person and not defined by who he cheered for but as for LSU i think of him when i see the purple and gold. Also Pistol Pete. A great player, and person. We have fans like you ran into also, i have not been so brave to wear another teams colors and see what its like but i have heard others tell me. Good Luck to you guys !
not telling anybody I'm from LSU after reading this piece

Why are Bama fans reading the reveille? And who walks around campus with a video camera and an opposing team T-shirt while encouraging "hostile and offensive Tiger fans" and expects not to be appalled? Really? And what kind of camera equipment does the reveille buy if all this shouting and yelling "bruised" the camera equipment?

While my opinion of the State of Louisiana was always that it is a toxic waste dump whose constituency is pure trash; I have to say that all the people I personally talked to who travelled down there for the game said they had a great time and were treated very hospitably. All fan bases have their dirtbags, LessU is no different, nor Alabama, or any other team in the SEC for that matter.

I have to say though, it takes a special group of people to build their homes below sea level, squander most all the funds alloted to them over the course of 140 years meant to keep up the levee system built by Robert E Lee, and then have the audacity to curse the rest of the nation for not being supportive enough when they flood. For Christ's sakes, even God forsaken Mississippi had more pride than that. But I digress... Best wishes on the recovery from tomorrow's hangover, and the next day's, and so on.

I saw most of the same things they saw on my first visit to Baton Rouge. Very crude and ignorant. I will say the LSU fans know how to rock a stadium though. We had one encounter after we (BAMA) scored our first touchdown. The IDIOT seatingi n front of us didn't think we should be cheering for our team so he cused us and threatened us (we were really scared). Once the two state troppers showed up and stared at him for almost 2 quarters, we never seemed to hear must from any more. I have one final word to say. Jealousy!!!!!
Rollllllllllllll Tide Roll.

I attended the game and was impressed by the atmosphere, enthusiasm for the school, and the very attractive women in Red Stick. I was treated with respect by all LSU fans to whom I was introduced and my LSU hosts were as gracious as any in the conference. Being 6'4'' and 255 pounds probably provides a degree of "security" to one walking through campus in a crimson dress shirt on the day of the Tide game. No one mocked me or insulted me to my face. However, on many occasions, I would pass a group of LSU "fans" and, once they were assured that I no longer could see the person(s) making the comment(s), the "fans" would spew vulgarities directed at me, my attire, my school, and my coach. This occurred on many occasions over a period of about two hours. I have visited every stadium and campus in the conference and it is a dead heat between the Gators and LSU as to which school's "fans" have the least class. LSU, I know that you are better than that. Please get over our hiring of the Dolphins' coach and UA's return to respectability. It is a football game. If you can't get over it, please have the decency to insult me to my face so that I can put you in the hospital. I'm sure that I would be treated better at the Red Stick jail than I was once I turned my back on your "fans." I look forward to hosting the game next year and will treat you well as we continue what should be a great rivalry in the tradition of southern football.

Why didn't the Reveille include the spitting and inappropriate touching? If the women had "their eyes" opened up by that sort've thing, why didn't they report the offenders to campus police?

This is irresponsible journalism, designed only to incite.

That you'd include a video, and then NOT include ANY of the allegations you put in print within the video-other than vulgarity of course, and I'm SUUUUUUUUUUURE no other SEC Fans ever curse-is completely reckless.

Par for the course out of what was once a proud student newspaper...

I'll be waiting for next year's story & video of Ms. Sax dressed up as a Tiger Fan in Tuscaloser...

I'll never forget my visit to LSU. My hosts were mortified by the treatment I received. Even the most beautiful co-eds hurled insults and curse words as though it was a sport to see who could be the most class-less. LSU has a beautiful campus, it's a shame my memory of it is so distasteful.
