Babbling Brooks: Oxford, Miss., is a strange place

Welcome to Bizarro World.

In this world, Ole Miss won the Southeastern Conference's Western Division in 2003, has three football national championships, is LSU's biggest rival and thinks it's kosher to say things like, "The South shall rise again."

What a truly strange existence they've got going on roughly 350 miles up the road in Oxford, Miss.

Well, in the real world — where the rest of us spend most of our free time — these things couldn't be further from the truth.

Since the SEC expanded in 1991 and went to its current divisional format in 1992, the league has hosted 17 league championship games between the winners of the Eastern
Division and the Western Division. Ole Miss has never made the trip to Atlanta.

In fact, in 2003, LSU won the division by traveling to Oxford and embarrassing star quarterback Eli Manning. Ole Miss is the only school in the West to never represent the division in the SEC championship game.

Likewise, Ole Miss' three national championships in football are purely fiction. That's "fantasy" for you Ole Miss alums. The NCAA doesn't recognize any of these fabricated achievements. None of Ole Miss' 1959, 1960 or 1962 squads were recognized as the best in the nation by the Associated Press or any of the other institutions the NCAA recognizes.

The notion that most LSU fans or players recognize the Rebels as a rival is false as well. Ole Miss is more of a pest to the Tigers than an actual competitor.

LSU holds a 55-38-4 all-time record against Ole Miss and has won seven of the nine games so far this millennium. This is not a rivalry — it's more an annual throttling.

The strangest part about Ole Miss is the general backlash from students and Rebel supporters alike against a proposal to change the words to the ending of some silly song their band plays, "From Dixie with Love."

The song was threatened to be banned earlier this year by the university for some objectionable lyrics it contained.

The ending line used to be "And the South shall rise again." The school is attempting to change the lyrics to "To hell with LSU."

Way to stay classy, Rebels.

It's fine LSU is the new supposed target of the Rebels' rage — that's not the issue.

Ole Miss' envy of LSU's success is pretty hilarious. They would go out of their way to damn
it to hell even when the two schools aren't even playing — pathetic.

The real issue here is the song before the proposed change.

At some point, Ole Miss fans thought yelling about a potential second uprising of a failed nation was a good idea. This is the most repugnant notion I've ever heard.

The whole situation is such a poor reflection on not just Ole Miss — which, admittedly, no one really thinks highly of anyway — but the entire Southern region of the United States.

The chant has been labeled as racist by its opponents, thus the need for a change — but I disagree. The chant in itself isn't racist, but the people supporting it seemingly are.

The Mississippi chapter of the Ku Klux Klan is planning an on-campus march in support of the South rising again, as well as keeping the phrase "The South will rise again" a part of the Ole Miss song, according to various news outlets near Oxford.

But racism isn't only from outside the school. An Ole Miss student, Michael Hudec, was featured in a video posted on YouTube about the cheer — a video that has since gone viral. In the video, Hudec drops a few f-bombs, a few n-bombs and says he supports the South rising again. It's sure to do wonders for recruiting those black athletes Ole Miss relies upon so heavily.

The chant and its supporters reek of racist overtones and overall stupidity about the Civil War. Anyone who knows anything about history would never think the South will rise again — at least any time soon.

Did the people at Ole Miss fall asleep in American history class? The South got spanked for the better part of four years during the war, and quite frankly, I don't want to see Atlanta burned down.

When people yell about a Southern uprising at the top of their lungs like it's something the majority of us believe in, we Southerners look like the backward yokels, as the rest of the country generally characterizes us.

It's fine for people to be idiots, and at Ole Miss, it appears idiocy is being celebrated with this cheer. But seriously, the Rebels and their fans need to keep this junk at home and away from college football.

I guess we as college football fans and citizens of the South shouldn't expect any better from Ole Miss.

They sing "Dixie," wave their confederate flags around proudly and, up until a few years ago, had a Colonel Sanders-looking "Southern Gentleman" roaming the sidelines as their mascot.

It's just a different, ignorant, racist way of life they have in Oxford.

Bizarro World, indeed.

This is a really pathetic excuse for 'journalism'. This 'babbler' may not like Oxford, but it sure seems quite the opposite for every other person who has ever visited this wonderful city. When the media comes, they admittedly enjoy every second; and they pass that on. Thank you for not having anything better to do than come up with classless trash like this, it really reflects well on your 'institution of higher learning' (which is what Ole Miss, LSU, Alabama, etc. ARE, by the way.)
Disappointed

LSU & the Manship School of Journalism have to be proud of this reflection of their knowledge sharing & students' retention over the past four years.

Really, this was actually approved to be posted.

That's probably the most amazing and ridiculous thing about this article.... Someone actually thought it would be a good idea to let this guy represent LSU as a journalist. I'm dumbfounded. It sounded like a 12 year old wrote it.

Good luck and godspeed to the LSU Football team, but hopefully the trip home is a long one.

Hey Hamburgler, what exactly happens when Mississippi is "annexed" from the United States?

Who really cares who is who's rival. The real point of this story is that seemingly Ole Miss has too many issues that are offensive to others. I am an Ole Miss student, I am white, and I was born and reared right here. I take great pride in the state of Mississippi. With that being said, I COMPLETELY disagree with the chant "The South Will Rise Again" and anything else that suggests racial tension. I say BE GONE with it all! (By the way, I am ONLY a student there! I am NOT a fan! I am a non-traditional student and Ole Miss JUST happens to offer what I need without traveling too far)

Is this what passes for journalism at LSU? This is pathetic. I understand that this is an opinion piece from an LSU fan about their opinion of Ole Miss and Oxford, but you are required to do at least a bit of research.

For your information, "From Dixie With Love" is a piece performed by the Ole Miss band. It is not a song, a song requires lyrics being performed along with music. The chant "The South Will Rise Again" are not lyrics to the song, it is merely a statement made by a group of students at the close of the piece.

Also, I'm interested to see evidence of this delusion that Ole Miss has not won three national championships. Perhaps it is simply a case that LSU fans, or the writer as it happens, wish that the Rebels didn't have them.

Finally, while the Ku Klux Klan will be protesting on the Ole Miss campus tomorrow, they are not protesting in support of the chant they are protesting in support of putting the piece back in the pre-game show. There are a lot of things going on with this entire issue that the rest of the country, LSU, and the SEC don't really understand. If someone attempted to remove the tiger as the LSU mascot or to prevent you from expressing yourself, I am sure there would also be cries of outrage. "From Dixie With Love"/The South Will Rise Again are just the top of a very large iceberg.

Do your research, "journalist".

Not your rival? Wasn't it the LSU student government association that picked the name Magnolia Bowl? We never wanted to name the game. LSU DID! Also, we "throttled" y'all 31-13 last in Baton Rouge. Did you forget about that little fact while you were choking down a corndog? You probably won't evern graduate from LSU but will end up with a degree from the SLU or some other nameless LA school like most of your inbred cajun school mates. HOTTY TODDY!

This little boy from GA should do a little research before he opens his mouth. LSU has as many purple and gold confederate flags than the UM. Don't even get me started on the KKK issue. LAWDY, LAWDY! Boy, maybe ya shouda gone to skool in GA!

If I had something better to do, I wouldn't be trying to defend Mississippi from the evil *insert corn-dog reference* mean guy who writes words for the news paper thing at school. Oh wait I completely agree that annexing Mississippi from the United States would be a step in the right direction.

Do some research. Your article is filled inaccuracies. If you truly are a communications major I would think you would be concerned about journalistic integrity and at least make an attempt to be correct. Of course I guess you do go to LSUx.

Hmmmm. Interesting but poorly written article that appears to be nothing more than a fans disdain for a team that he claims is not a rival. Oh well, at 21 I did some pretty stupid things as well.

Wasn't it Louisiana that had a judge refuse a license for an african american and caucasian that were planning on marriage??????

And you were a young 19 the last time that the Cajun faithful came to Oxford. Several of my friends and I remarked that it was the largest display of confederate flags we had seen in some time. Of course, they were purple and gold.

You have embarrassed yourself and your school with this blatant attempt to take an isolated incident and portray it in the manner you have chosen to do. If it's not too late, you may want to consider changing your major.

Everytime I go to Baton Rouge or LSU comes to Oxford, I see LSU waving those purple and gold confederate flags. I know you have seen them, but you convienently left that out. LSU is one of the most racist schools in the country. Your whole article is a lie. I can't wait to beat the Tigers as again this year.

Seriously. The simple fact that you even write an article about Ole Miss being a rival only shows the opposite. As for classy, putting this article on a school newspaper website? Really? How is writing an so-called professional piece of work bashing another institution classy? At least we don't spend millions of dollars just to put a tiger in cage.

Stay classy Baton Rouge

"different, ignorant, racist way of life"

Pot meet Kettle.

Have you seen your fanbase at LSU? By far the biggest inbred, different, ignorant race I've ever witnessed in my life. Can you understand half of your fans when they talk? 3/4 of them crawl out of the swamp to get to baton rouge- which is a wonderful town by the way. Seems like a wonderful place to live. Please note sarcasm. I'd rather live in Arkansas.

And we could care less about your said rivalry. We think that it's funny ya'll think we think it's a rivalry. Fact of the matter we consider at least 3 teams in the SEC West are bigger rivals than your has-been school.

Respect the HAT and Turtle Neck. What a joke! The longer ya'll have less Miles, the sooner you'll be claiming Mississippi State as a "rival."
